Compaq SW3324
Dual-Speed Switch
Standard Features
The ever-evolving corporate network and the exploding popularity of the Internet and high bandwidth desktop
applications are driving the need for Fast Ethernet, workgroup segmentation and traffic prioritization. High-
performance and broad feature sets that address these needs are required.
The SW3324 is a member of Compaq’s high-density, dual-speed Layer 2 switch family that enables high
throughput for traffic within and between sites.
When used in conjunction with Compaq’s Enterprise Gigabit Enterprise Switches, such as the GigaSwitch
Router, and the SW5400 Switches, the SW3324 is ideal for meeting the needs of today’s high-performance
networks. The low cost and high port count make it a cost-effective, scalable, and flexible solution for dedicated
10/100 Mbps connections to the desktop or 1000 Mbps connections to the corporate backbone. Its extensive
features provide the management needed for the workgroup and department.
EASE OF USE
Auto-negotiation
Each RJ-45 switched port automatically senses if it is a 10 Mbps or a 100 Mbps network connection and sets the
appropriate speed, thus allowing for seamless communication among the Ethernet family of protocols.
Customers then have the flexibility to maintain their current Ethernet infrastructure and add Fast Ethernet as
necessary.
Diagnostic LEDs
Port LEDs on the switch indicate link and network activity for easy installation and troubleshooting.
Software Download
Switch software is stored in a 2-MB flashable ROM and can easily be upgraded by using the industry-standard
Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) to download new software to the switch. Software can also be downloaded
using the XMODEM protocol via the serial console port.
Hot-swappable GBIC Ports
Hot-swappable GBIC ports allow the user to configure 1000Base-SX or LX ports as needed, providing a highly
flexible and fault tolerant cabling solution as the network grows.
PERFORMANCE
Compaq dual-speed switches help address today’s network requirements with outstanding performance and a
broad feature set.
Fast Ethernet Ports
This IEEE 802.1D-compliant Ethernet switches support up to 24 IEEE 802.3u 100Base-TX Fast Ethernet ports.
Each port can alternatively operate as an IEEE 802.3i 10Base-T port. The SW3324 ships configured with 1 hot-
swappable 1000Base-SX GBIC module and 1 open GBIC module Slot that can be filled with the optional
1000Base-SX or 1000Base-LX GBIC Modules for flexible network configuration.
Full-Duplex Mode
Full-duplex mode allows the switch to transmit and receive data simultaneously, increasing throughput.
Flow Control
The switch supports frame-based and back-pressure type flow control configurable on a per port basis. For full-
duplex flow control, the SW3324 is compliant with the IEEE 802.3x specification.
Class of Service
For optimal use with multimedia and other bandwidth-intensive applications, selected traffic passing through the
switches can be assigned a higher priority and will not be hindered in flowing through the switch during periods
of high network traffic congestion.
